In order to test our framework, the team drove to Southgate to visit the potential park lots we had found through our framework.
First site
Notes: On a relatively busy street, good access including a metro spot. Very close to South Gate Park. Seemed to be being actively maintained. Overall seems like a good spot for a park.
Second site
Notes: A few small trees, dead grass. Multiple monitoring wells on the site could complicate building a park here. Lot is tucked away on a quiet street but is right near a school. There is a residental area within walking distance. The LA River Bike Path is also within walking distance. Not a lot of cars or traffic on the street where the lot is located. Across the street from site 3. Overall, would be a good site however monitoring wells may indicate contamination.
Third site
Notes: Lot is all dirt with some piles of gravel in the back. Tire tracks in dirt might indicate that they are going to do construction. Lot is tucked away on a quiet street but is right near a school. There is a residental area within walking distance. The LA River Bike Path is also within walking distance. Not a lot of cars or traffic on the street where the lot is located. Across the street from site 2. Overall, could be a good site, signs of construction on site could indicate its use making it unviable.
Fourth site
Notes: About half the lot is covered by concrete and the other half is dirt and dead grass. There are telephone poles running through the site. Located on a main street with some people walking around. The area behind the lot is all residential. Metro bus stop in front of the site. The street it is on is relatively busy, but there are crosswalks to access the lot. There was also a for lease sign on the lot, but it looked very old. Unclear whether this lot is viable or not.
